Ites Battle Past Snodland Town to Secure Hard-Fought FA Cup Victory
Sheppey United ground out a tenacious 1–0 away victory against Snodland Town to book their place in the next round of the FA Cup, with Mikey Salako’s second-half penalty proving the difference.
The Ites came into the tie heavily depleted. Hamstring injuries sidelined Mams Diallo and Dylan Adjei-Hersey, while Stevie Hedges (illness) and Alfie Evans (back) were also ruled out. With Alfie Hilden cup-tied and both Simon Kabamba and Joseph Chidyausiku away, Sheppey were boosted by the return of goalkeeper Harley Earle to the starting XI. Youth prospects Ryan Santry and Freddie "Chip" Godden both earned spots on the bench.
Attacking up the Snodland slope in the first half, Sheppey were called into action early. Earle made a crucial save at his near post inside two minutes to deny a sharp drive from a tight angle. Defender Harry Lawrence was also booked after 11 minutes, meaning he had to be careful for the remainder of the game.
Sheppey gradually found their rhythm down the flanks. Danny Leonard came closest to breaking the deadlock for the Ites in the 21st minute when he broke clear, only to see his low effort saved by the host keeper, Frankie Leonard.
Despite further half-chances—including a blocked strike from Salako and an attempt from Sophee-Turner on the stroke of half-time—the sides went into the break locked at 0–0.
The second half turned into a physical, hard-fought battle of attrition. Managerial adjustments saw Skinner replace Sophee-Turner on 65 minutes to freshen up the midfield drive.
The crucial breakthrough came in the 75th minute. Mo Dabo was upended inside the area after driving forward, leaving the referee no choice but to point to the penalty spot. Mikey Salako stepped up and coolly converted to send the travelling Ites supporters into celebration.
Snodland pushed for an equaliser in a fiery final quarter of an hour. The hosts thought they had snatched a dramatic late leveller in the 91st minute when a corner was bundled into the net, but the referee promptly disallowed the goal and booked the Snodland attacker for punching the ball past Earle.
Sheppey navigated five minutes of injury time—and a missed late chance by D’Jean Spencer—to hold firm and seal a crucial 1–0 away victory.
