Sheppey's afternoon got off to a disastrous start in just the 6th minute when Harry Lawrence was sent off for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity after a loose touch. The early red card forced an immediate defensive reshuffle, pushing Mams Diallo into central defence alongside Josh Wisson and moving Dylan Ajei-Hersey back to right-back after the winger finally started a game this season further forward in place of Danny Leonard who was carrying a slight knock.

Herne Bay capitalised on the numerical advantage in the 17th minute when Joe Taylor intercepted a loose pass from Cameron Andrews to open the scoring. Taylor doubled the visitors' lead in the 29th minute, leaving Sheppey with a steep uphill battle before half-time and with midfielders Cameron Andrews and Alfie Evans both on yellow cards.

Despite a substitution changes—including debutant Makhaya James making way for Simon Kabamba at the break—Herne Bay sealed the victory in the 58th minute through Jacob Lambert, making it 3–0. Sheppey fought to get on the scoresheet late in the game, Alfie Evans with a long range effort and with Danny Leonard testing Bay keeper Wray from 25 yards out in the 87th minute, but the visitors comfortably held onto their clean sheet.
