Sheppey United can confirm that Billy Bennett has today departed the club for pastures new. Club captain Bennett represented the Ites on 119 occasions, scoring 40 times.
Billy spoke to the club this morning and wanted to pay tribute to all concerned, “With a heavy heart it’s goodbye for now!
“I’ve truly enjoyed my time at Sheppey United but as the saying goes, all good things must come to an end one day and unfortunately that time has now come.
“Thank you to everybody involved in the club during my time there. Both the paid and non-paid staff, the people who work tirelessly behind the scenes to make the club run, the board, the past and present players, and most of all the fans.
“Thanks to those who stuck by me throughout all and welcomed both me and my family into your community with open arms. You really are the heartbeat of the club and the support and appreciation has been unbelievable.
“A special shout out to the people I’ve got to know personally at the club, I wouldn’t want to miss out anyone but you’ll know who you are.
“I have nothing but respect for the club and I do hope that our paths cross again one day as it’s a club that will forever have my heart. This was a really tough decision to make but I need to give myself a new challenge.
“It’s very rare these days that players can not only boast over 100 appearances for one club but to also win trophies along the way. All made more being the captain which are memories I will remember for a very long time.
Hope to see you all soon and wishing you nothing but the best for your journey.”
Joint Chairman Matthew Smith wished Billy all the best by saying, “We thank Billy for all his efforts during the time at our club and the opportunity offered to him was one too good to turn down, whilst we are disappointed Billy is leaving he has done so with the honour we expect from our captains both past and present.
“Billy has become a friend through football and just like you, I will miss him at the club. But as we have always said the show must go on so we wish Bill well and get on with plans for the game Tuesday night away at Hythe – Good luck Billy and maybe one day our paths will cross again in the fullness of time.”
Thank you for the memories Billy from us all at Sheppey United FC.
