Popular defender Dan Birch has today agreed to extend his stay with Sheppey United into the 2022/23 season.

This coming season will be the fourth season at the Ites for Dan having joined the Islanders for the 2019/20 season where the defender quickly become a fans favourite with his determined style of play and making 20 appearances.

The 2020/21 season would again see the former Charlton Athletic defender feature regularly, participating in 16 games before covid cut short the season.

2021/22 was a massive season for “Birchy” – playing 50 games with an impressive win percentage of 86%. Of those 50 games Dan played in every defensive position demonstrating further his commitment to the cause whilst also racking up 4 man of the match awards to sit alongside his 4 winners medals from securing the league title and 3 cups.

Speaking about extending his stay Dan said, “I’ve been here 3 seasons now with 2 stop start seasons due to covid. It felt great to get a full season under the belt and the feeling of winning the league & 4 trophies in total is something that cannot be matched for a very, very long time!

“I’m buzzing to continue my journey with Ites, the staff and players are amazing but ultimately what makes this club is the fans, being our 12th man week in week out!

“I’m looking forward to playing in a division higher next year to see how we match up against teams, as I believe the squad we have with a couple of additions could be very interesting and I don’t see why it couldn’t be another successful year!

“Have a great summer and I’ll see you very soon – UP THE ITES!”

Assistant Manager Marcel Nimani was pleased Dan committed for a fourth term, “It’s great to have another retainee from 2019/20 when our project started, so we’re thrilled the deal is done.

“Birchy has become a key figure in our starting eleven, providing us with flexibility due to his versatility, experience and consistency. Theses are all key attributes to take into our new league for 2022/23”.
